Guillaume DeGarmo, full body

Guillaume DeGarmo is a collector of trinkets and relics from Earth who can be found in a TerraBrew Coffee in the New Atlantis spaceport. You can find him sitting a table in the middle of the restaurant, lamenting the loss of a gem. He will attempt to get you to recover it for him.

He is an older man with gray hair and a goatee wearing Frontier Attire. He carries a medium amount of Credits on his person. Additionally, he has a leveled handgun with ammunition for it.

When you approach him or engage him in conversation, he will greet you with a few different lines:

"At this rate, I won't even have a collection... Well, can't give up now, perhaps my luck will turn."
"My colleague has an amazing relic in his possession: A spoon recovered from Earth! Ah, I'm so envious."
"Treasure everything when you have it. You never know when you may lose it."
"That George Saint-George... How many items have I lost to him?"
"Nothing wrong with a simple bet. Well, as long as you win."
"Take it from an old man: Everything is precious. But some things are a little more so..."

Before his gem is returned he may also melodramatically say:

Here one moment, gone the next... I tell you, you must cherish everything and everyone while they're here. You never know when you may lose them!"

You will be able to respond by saying:

I'm sorry for your loss or It takes time to grieve. Your loss will get easier with time.

Which will have him reply:

"Thank you. I appreciate that." or "I hope you're right."

Regardless of which option you picked, he will continue by saying:

"You see, I lost something invaluable. Lost it in a bet, if you must know. It was one of my most prized items in my collection. It was a gem - priceless, no doubt - and its beauty was blinding. Life seems a little less bright without it. That scoundrel George Saint-George has it in his possession now. Knowing that fills me with such envy and anger!"

You will have a few options to react to his actual grievance:

If you miss it that badly, there has to be a way to get it back.
"I agree. I think I know just the thing..."
Well, it sounds like you lost it fair and square. Try to move on.
"That is something I simply can't do. I must have it back in my possession at once!""
All of this over a gem you lost in a bet? You made it seem like someone died.
"Well, yes. A part of me died when I lost it..."

He will then proceed to offer you a job to retrieve it:

"Saint-George, like myself, is a collector of trinkets and relics from Earth. I have in my possession a plate that I'm sure he won't be able to live without. Please, would you be my hero and go exchange the plate for the jewel? I'm sure it will work."

You can either accept, decline, or ask him why he will not just get it back himself at this point. If you accept, it will officially start the mission Gem Jealousy.

Why can't you do it yourself?
"Oh, god no! I could never face him myself! I'd be sick just at the sight of him! Saint-George would never give the gem back if I went myself. He would gain a smug satisfaction from declining the offer."
My hands are tied right now. Can't do it.
"Alright... but if you reconsider, please come back to me."

Mission-Related Events[edit]

Agreeing to help him will have him hand over the plate, as well as officially introduce himself.

Okay, I'll make the exchange for you.
"Fantastic! Here's the plate. Come back to me when you have the gem, and please don't drop it! Oh, and where are my manners? My name is Guillaume, by the way. It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance!"
What if George rejects the exchange? Are you sure the plate is enough?
"I can assure you with near certainty he won't decline. As much as I hate to say it, Saint-George and I are cut from the same cloth. We both adore relics from Earth, no matter how large or monetarily valuable they are. They're a piece of human history, and that means a lot to us both. It pains me to part with the plate, but I happen to have a few others in my collection. If it means sacrificing one to get the gem back, I will."
This gem must mean a lot to you.
"It does. It was the first item I ever collected. The start of it all. I received that gem when I was a young, young man. To know that I foolishly wagered it, threw it away... *Sigh* Well, I won't make that mistake again."

George Saint-George will give you absolutely no trouble, gladly accepts the plate in return for the gem, and states that the gem is in fact worthless and that he would have returned it if he had simply asked. He will explain that the two are in actuality, extremely close, but Guillaume is overly dramatic and a sore loser. With the gem in your possession, you can return it to Guillaume.

Here's your gem, safe and sound.
"Ah, wonderful! I knew George would make the exchange. He could never resist foodware from Earth. You've done me a great service today, friend. I'll be sure to never take this gem for granted ever again. Thank you for bringing it back to me."

Conversations[edit]

Guillaume will both Wen Tseng at UC Distribution.

Wen Tseng: "Oh no..."
Guillaume DeGarmo: "Hello there, Wen!"
Wen Tseng: "*Sigh* Mr. DeGarmo, we've been over this before. We are not interested in your ancient fork collection. Please take your offer somewhere else."
Guillaume DeGarmo: "I can't comprehend how you'd willingly deprive yourselves of such amazing artifacts. And for such a low price!"
Wen Tseng: "Mr. DeGarmo, I must insist that you leave. Please."
Guillaume DeGarmo: "That's fine, but I'll be back to check again in a few days. Ta-ta!"

Johann Baptiste will check in on him from time to time:

'Johann Baptiste": "Hey, how are you doing?"
'Johann Baptiste": "How's it going, Guillaume?"
'Johann Baptiste": "Hey Guillaume. You hanging in there?"
'Guillaume DeGarmo": "Good to see you, Johann."
'Guillaume DeGarmo": "Ah, hello there."
'Guillaume DeGarmo": "Johann! Greetings!"
'Johann Baptiste": "Keep on keeping on."
'Johann Baptiste": "I'll see you around, Guillaume. Hang in there."
'Johann Baptiste": "Good. Take care of yourself."
'Guillaume DeGarmo": "Life's been a bit hard recently, but it'll get better. It always does. "
'Guillaume DeGarmo": "Things could be better, but I'm doing alright."
'Guillaume DeGarmo": "I'm doing just fine, thank you."
