Official Summary[edit]
"The player's search for one of the final Artifacts leads them to Nishina Research Station, a remote research outpost near the edge of the settled systems. Once inside, they find themselves shifting between two universes: one where the station is intact and inhabited, and the other where it has been destroyed in a catastrophic fire, leaving only one survivor. The player must navigate the shifting, gain control of the phenomenon, and shift back and forth between universes to claim the Artifact.\n\nThis quest, MQ207C, has the bulk of the dialogue for the actual quest."
Quick Walkthrough[edit]
- Head to Nishina Research Station.
- Talk to Ethan Hughes.
- Follow Ethan, shifting between universes, and talk to Rafael Aguerro.
- Shifting through universes again, talk to Director Patel.
- With more shifting, get to the Fabrication Lab and obtain the Probe Control Unit.
- Head down to the Research Level.
- Deactivate the security in each section until you reach the High Energy Research Lab.
- Either stop the experiment, dooming one universe, or complete the experiment, collapsing the universes into one.
Walkthrough[edit]
During Final Glimpses Vladimir gave you two locations to artifacts, one of them on Freya III.When you approach Freya III you will encounter a satellite which is trying to hail you. If you accept the call you will receive a garbled emergency message from Nishina Research Station requesting emergency evacuation.
During the course of this mission you will travel between the original, intact station, and an alternate, destroyed station.
Prelude[edit]
Land at Nishina Research Station and head up to the entrance. Use the intercom to talk to Ethan Hughes, who apparently knows nothing of the distress satellite but will let you in to talk to Director Kaia Patel. For security reasons Hughes insists you come alone, so, if you have a follower, they will wait outside.
Once you enter the station, Hughes will announce a lockdown and lead you towards the director. As you walk through storage, you will be shifted to the alternate station which is overgrown, destroyed, and filled with Cataxi Warriors. After killing them all, you will shift back to a confused Hughes. the same amount of time has passed in both realities, as Hughes tells you that you were gone for a minute. He identifies the creatures you describe as native to the planet, but he believes nothing of your story and suspects that you may be a spy. He will continue to lead you to the director.
As you follow Hughes into the Work Room you shift again, this time meeting Rafael Aguerro who is hiding behind a desk. He sent the distress signal you picked up and he theorizes that you shifting may be a side effect of the accident. Three months ago Rafael was calibrating an experiment in the high energy research lab when an explosion caused a gas leak and sparked a fire. Rafael was trapped in the control room while the rest of the station died in a resulting explosion. He also tells you that the probe used in the experiment feeds energy into the artifact.
Mid conversation, you shift back to an alarmed Hughes who is talking to the director on the intercom. When he notices that you are back he calms down and you continue towards the director's office. He also gives you directions to the director's office in case anything happens: On the second floor, end of the hall. This comes in handy when you leave the work room into the hall and shift again.
When you proceed down the floor Cataxi Warriors will attack you from the room on your left. In the same room you find the corpse of Dr. Tatiana Barakova as well as Dr. Barakova's Journal. Go back into the hallway and into the room marked 'Emergency'. Dispose of a couple more Cataxi Warriors and go up the staircase, where you shift back.
By this point Hughes is more annoyed that perturbed by the shifting and you continue to the director's office.
Director Patel introduces herself and chief scientist Maria Hughes, who give some backstory on the facility. The hydrogen leak which killed the crew in the alternate station was contained in a minute or two so there was no explosion. On this side Rafael is presumed dead, it hasn't been confirmed yet because the research level has been locked down since the accident. You also learn that the whole facility was built to study the gravitational distortion caused by the artifact. It seems that the point of divergence occurred while Rafael was running the calibration, in the original universe he died but the station was saved, in the alternative universe he survived but the rest of the station died.
The station is cut off from the research level due to the lockdown, however they know the experiment is ongoing due to an increasing gravitational field. To shut down the experiment, you will need to travel through the alternative universe to bypass the lockdown. You can control your shifting via the Probe Control Unit, just as soon as you can fetch it from the fabrication lab.
To the Fabrication Lab[edit]
Follow Maria to the fabrication lab next door. Unfortunately, when you leave the office and make a turn, you shift. Make your way through the destroyed station until you drop through the ceiling into the work room to meet Rafaell once again. He gives you Nishina Pantry Keycard and follows you. Continue through the pantry, killing Cataxi, until you enter the cafeteria and shift int othe original universe.
Your sudden appearance shocks and frightens everyone in the cafeteria. You don't get far shifting again to the alternative universe as you go through the door to the main hall.
Go through the hole in the wall to your right and through the door to your left. Fight off the Cataxi Warriors. You seem to be at a dead end. You can go into security but there is no way forward. In security you can access this universe's Security Office Computer where you can look at this universe's version of the security log of the day of the accident. Talk to Rafael to discuss options. He will try to clear the door. When you go back into security you shift back to the original universe.
Talk to Ethan Hughes who is right in front of you. He gives you directions to the fabrication lab, down the hall and the stairs next to the atrium, and unlocks the door. If you ask him about the Cataxi he will unlock Security Office Computer which had been locked with expert security level. He also tells you that the research level's security system may attack you as long as lockdown is active. You can also persuade him to give you Experiment A-7 to deal with the Cataxi in the other universe.
From here, you will try to navigate to the original universe's fabrication while dealing with constant shifting. Unlike before, you will shift at specific points, meaning that you can control which universe you are by trial and error.
Heading into storage, or into the dining hall, will cause you to shift. You can shift back by returning to the security office. Head straight through the main hall and shift to the alternative universe. Fight the Cataxi and continue through the left door at the end of the main hall. Head through the breach in the wall and into the atrium. Kill the Cataxi and go through the door in the south-eastern wall. Turn right go up the stairs and you will shift. Go up the stairs and turn left into fabrication lab where Maria Hughes is waiting for you with the Probe Control Unit.
She reveals a distortion on the other side of the lab which can be used to shift to the alternative universe. While there, grab the Probe Control Unit which is on a workbench across the room. Head to the visible distortion and calibrate to shift back to the original universe. With this, you are now in control of shifting between the universes via the visible distortions.
Head back to the director with your newfound ability. You'll shortly be heading down to the research lab.
Back to the Director[edit]
Return to the director who will discuss your next steps. Once the experiment is shut down, whatever universe you are in will become the canonical universe and the other will cease to exist. She asks that you consider the 30-odd people who survived in this universe over the one that survived in the alternative one. You are not locked into the decision you tell Director Patel you will make.
You can now freely move around both universes without involuntarily shifts. To shift, select "calibrate" at the visible distortions.
Before heading to the research level, you can collect supplies from the clinic. Talk to Dr. Tatiana Barakova and she will give you a few medical supplies. If you picked up her journal from the other universe she will give you a few more supplies and will be a bit more affable. In her office you can find this universe's version of Dr. Barakova's Journal, accessible either by picking an advanced lock, or shifting.
Research Level - Facilities[edit]
Use the distortion next to the elevator to shift to the alternative universe, where the elevator is unlocked. Ride it down to the research level and shift back, as the entry hall is nearly collapsed.
In the first room, either pick a master lock or shift universes to access the locked room. This room has a Nishina Particle Lab Keycard which will give you access to the particle lab.
Fight the automated security system and continue through the facility. Head down a ramp and in the room labeled "80" is a distortion that will bring you to the alternative universe. Use this to access room 82 which has a (destroyed) terminal to override the lockdown for this section. Shift to the original universe (via a distortion in the corner) and override the lockdown at the now functional Facilities Computer. This will unlock all the doors in this section.
Leave room 82 through the south-western door, turn right below the ramp and go into the particle accelerator room.
Research Level - Particle Accelerator[edit]
This section, like the one before it, is locked down. To proceed you will need to override the lockdown at a terminal.
Shift to the alternative universe, head down the corridor and the stairs, and shift back to the original universe. Proceed downstairs into a large room with catwalks and accelerator tubes into a short fight with the security systems.
Once dispatched, shift to the alternative universe to access the accelerator room. Fight Cataxi, or shift back to the original universe and fight the security system. Once one universe is cleared, return to Accelerator Robotics and pick up the Nishina Utility Closet Keycard from a table between two workstations.
In the alternative universe, climb up the broken staircase in accelerator robotics and leave through the door ahead on the right into the main accelerator room, then shift to the original universe. Go west between the accelerator tube and the wall. The last door on the left side is the utility closet. Unlock it and use the distortion inside to shift to the alternate universe.
The alternative universe gives you access to the Accelerator Mainframe Computer, however much like the Facilities Computer, it is destroyed in this universe. Shift to the original universe and use it to override the lockdown for the Accelerator Control Room. The security in this room is active, so you will need to fight the robots and turrets.
Shift between universes to leave the room via the same way you got in, returning to the original universe. Head upstairs and use the Accelerator Control Room Computer to end lockdown in accelerator section.
Leave accelerator control into the main room and go to the eastern corner where on the floor level a door to the access tunnel is now open.
Research Level - Storage[edit]
Just like before, you will need to override the lockdown of this section to proceed. The door on the far side of the tunnel is blocked, so use the distortion about half way between the doors to shift to the alternate universe. The door in the alternate universe is blocked even more, but there is a collapsed section in the south wall that leads into a natural cave filled with Cataxi. While you can shift to the original universe here, there is no reason to unless you need a break from the fighting. Follow a dirt ramp and bridge up into a destroyed room, shift here into the original universe.
Leave the room and follow the sign on the wall towards high energy research lab. The door to storage at the end of the corridor is locked, so turn left into room 10 into a fight with the security systems. Use the distortion in the south east corner of the room to shift to the alternate universe. Leave the room via a hole in the wall and fight Cataxi (including a Queen).Keep to the wall on you right hand side and climb up the rocks that lead on top of room 10. Drop down into a corridor and go left into storage.
Fight some more Cataxi. Then go ahead and right twice into the office. Use the distortion here to shift into the original universe. Use the Storage Room Computer to override lockdown in storage section. You can also use the Storage Room Security Computer to deactivate the defenses, otherwise you will have to fight them when you leave the office.
Leave the office and go left, past the containers, and up the ramp ahead. You find yourself in front of accelerator tubes again. Use the distortion ahead and slightly to your right to shift to the alternate universe. Go up the catwalks through the open door to the stairs. At the top of the stairs you find a small room with a big window overlooking a large chamber. Finally, you are at the high energy research lab!
High Energy Research Lab[edit]
In the lab there are numerous distortions that bring you between the universes. Here, you have a number of options:
- Stop the experiment from the original universe, destroying the alternative universe along with Rafael.
- Stop the experiment from the alternative universe, destroying the original universe along with the crew of the station (but saving Rafael).
- Complete the experiment, collapsing the universes into one, saving everyone.
You will need to accomplish your goals while fighting off the security (if saving the original universe), Cataxi (if saving the alternative universe), or both (if completing the experiment).
Stop the Experiment[edit]
Firstly, shift into the universe that you want to save. There is no reason to traverse between the two to stop the experiment.
In the lab are seven power interlocks. Release all seven of them, fighting Cataxi or the security. Once all seven interlocks are released, hit the button to the right of the artifact to stop the experiment, dooming the other universe.
Once the experiment is stopped, you can pick up the artifact, which will cause a vision. A door, on the right side of the research lab, will open and give easy access to the elevator back to the surface.
Should you save the original universe, the crew of the station express gratitude and give you a spacesuit for your efforts. Alternatively, should you save the alternative universe, Rafael is shocked that you returned and did not pick the original universe to save. He gives you some supplies and follows you to your ship to escape the planet. He can later be found at the Viewport and can be recruited as a companion.
Complete the Experiment[edit]
This process is entirely unmarked and requires reading and remembering slates and computer entries to complete. To complete the experiment, you will need to follow the protocol for both the original and alternative universe. Both universes need to complete the experiment for them to collapse into one.
Ignore the quest markers (do not touch the interlocks, if you do, just hit them again to turn them back on). Shift to the original universe and head to Rafael's body. He is in the north east corner of the room below the catwalk. Pick up and read Probe Calibration Protocol off his body. It describes the steps you need to take.
Head to the control room, which is above his body and under lockdown. Shift between the universes to access it, what you need is in both the original and alternative universes. Front and center of the room is Lab Control Computer. Next to it you find Calibration Test which has some more information you need. In the original universe is the Lab Security Computer which can be used to deactivate the security in the lab.
Access the Control Computer and select Degaussing. If any interlocks are off, you will need to turn them on. Once selected, it will give a list of interlocks that need to be degaussed. These are randomized in every walk through. To degauss, turn the interlock off and back on.
There are seven numbered power interlocks:
- South side of the probe.
- North side of the probe.
- Below the probe platform on the south side.
- Below the probe platform on the north side.
- South catwalk on a console near the center.
- On the east side of a massive construction behind the probe platform.
- On a machine below the north catwalk's east end.
Once degaussed, return to the control terminal and re-select Degaussing. The process should now complete. Select "Frequency Calibration". If any interlocks are off, this step will fail, and you will need to turn them back on.
Based on the universe you are in, select the correct frequency:
- Original Universe: 40GHz
- Alternative Universe: 24GHz
Repeat this process in the alternative universe. Both universes need to be degaussed and calibrated. Once both are calibrated, the screen will say (in both universes) "Intake Waveform: STABLE" and list the intake frequency in both universes as 34 GHz.
Activate the Primary Calibration Control (located on the left side of the artifact) in both universes to complete the experiment. You will shift a couple of times and have another vision. You wake up on a stretcher with Dr. Barakova looking over you. On your left Rafael is looking at his own corpse. After a brief discussion Director Patel lets you go with the artifact, and Rafael heads to New Atlantis for a well deserved vacation, and can be recruited as crew there.
You can talk to everyone who survived:
- Dr. Barakova in the clinic.
- Director Patel in her office.
- Maria Hughes in the fabrication lab. Maria will give you credits if you return the probe control unit from the alternate universe.
- Ethan Hughes in security.
