The Nishina Research Station is a research station on Freya III, Freya System.
BackgroundEdit
The facility was founded in 2326.
They were experimenting on Artifact XI, however three months before the events of Starfield a mishap while calibrating the experiment caused an explosion. This explosion caused two different realities to appear.
In one reality (called the "Original Universe"), the explosion killed Rafael Aguerro and sent the research level into an automated lockdown which could not be raised. This explosion also caused a hydrogen leak which was quickly fixed. For the months following the explosion, the station mourned the loss of their colleague and attempted to regain access to the research level.
In the other reality (called the "Alternative Universe"), Rafael survived the explosion. However, the hydrogen leak rapidly got out of hand and resulted in a fuel-air explosion in the above ground facility, instantly killing everyone except Rafael. The research level was never locked down, and Rafael made his way up to the now destroyed ground level station in the hopes of rescue. Rafael enabled a distress satellite in the hopes of being saved, this satellite was eventually discovered by the player. In the meantime, a local predator called the Cataxi quickly took over the station with their nests.
The player will unwillingly switch between two different realities during the quest Entangled. Once the Probe Control Unit is acquired, you are able to use the unit to enter distortions and choose which reality to be in to shut down the experiment. During the course of the experiment the player will either destroy one of the realities, saving those in the other, or collapse the realities into one and save the entire station crew.

The first reality is the initial reality upon entering the facility. In this reality, all members of the facility are alive with the exception of Rafael. This reality can be made permanent by turning off the machine while in this reality.

The second reality is first entered after leaving the foyer and entering the storage room. In this reality, only Rafael is alive and the facility is in ruin, with hostile Cataxi everywhere. This reality can be made permanent by turning off the machine while in this reality.
