The entrance to Brown Horse Tavern. A glowing sign with the name is above the door, and a bar can be seen through it.

It is located in the territory of the United Colonies, the largest military and political power in the Settled Systems. The city itself is mostly underground, though it began on the surface.

History[edit]

Construction on New Homestead took place from 2107 to 2130, conducted by NASA with the mission to search for microbial life using the Biolab. Eventually, this search was deemed a failure, and NASA pulled out of the project, allowing the inhabitants to become an independent colony in 2185. Under NASA, the outpost had been known as the "Titan Astrobase", but the inhabitants renamed it to New Homestead upon gaining independence. In addition to methane processing, its economy is largely centered around tourism, thanks to its status as one of the oldest colonies in the settled systems, its position in the sol system, and its relative pleasantness compared to Mars.

Locations[edit]

  • Brown Horse Tavern is one of two restaurants in New Homestead, and the oldest continually operating restaurant in the Settled Systems.
  • Ymir's Horn, a geological formation - specifically, a collis - located right next to the landing pad.
  • A Museum, mainly containing historical artifacts from Earth.
  • The Ice Mines, the source for most of New Homestead's drinking water.
  • The Biolab, a research facility originally created by NASA to search for indigenous microbial life on Titan.
  • The methane mine and processing facility, a large factory responsible for much of New Homestead's economy. It also provides methane to the residents for heating, and emergency power and water.
  • A Chunks franchise, mainly responsible for providing tourists with "a taste of home" and not frequented by locals.
  • Ship Services: Exclusive access to advanced Nova Galactic parts

Notes[edit]

A Photo of Ymir's Horn, a jagged hill (or collis) on the surface of Titan.
Ymir's Horn

Bill Starsap remarks that Ymir's Horn was originally named after a popular fictional character, but was renamed to avoid legal action. This is likely a reference to the fact that, in real life, all colles on Titan are named after characters from JRR Tolkien's books, mostly names from The Lord of the Rings trilogy. [1]

The Brown Horse Tavern's name is an anachronism, as horses have gone extinct by the time of Starfield.
