Maura Munich

Maura Munich is a resident of New Homestead on Titan.

Background[edit]

Munich is a native of Titan and has never left the moon before.[1] Her family includes her grandmother,[2] her husband Nathaniel and her daughter Sylvie.[3] She is working the local farm with her family,[4] is welcoming and helpful toward visitors,[5][6][7] and is also curious about their knowledge of other worlds.[8]

Munich is particularly interested in the intricacies of space travel,[9][10][11] the way law and order is handled in the Freestar Collective,[12][13] the location of New Atlantis,[3][14] and planets with breathable atmospheres that don't require wearing a space suit.[1][15]

While she is generally enthusiastic about the idea of traveling to new places, she is also aware of potential risks.[16][17]
She also sympathizes with persons equally inexperienced in traveling as her.[18][19][20]

References[edit]

  1. 1.0 1.1 Maura Munich: "Are there really planets full of plants, fresh air, and water?"
Player: "Yes, there are beautiful planets teeming with life of all kinds."
Maura Munich: "I've read about them. It seems incredible, doesn't it? I've only ever known Titan, and it's always so cold and drab. I've always dreamed of visiting one, to breathe the air, feel the warmth of its sun. But, my husband is reluctant to leave our home."
  2. Maura Munich: "What's New Atlantis like?"
Player: "It's terrible. Give me a frontier city, or a small colony like this any day."
Maura Munich: "Maybe my grandmother was right all along, then. We shouldn't look to other colonies with envy, and learn to appreciate what we have here. I guess I can understand why so many people want to come visit us, then. They're just longing to escape to a simpler life, I suppose."
  3. 3.0 3.1 Maura Munich: "What's New Atlantis like?"
Player: "It's amazing. Huge skyscrapers, beautiful skies, people from all walks of life!"
Maura Munich: "Oh my! That sounds incredible. Ever since I overheard one of the tourists speaking about it, I've always wanted to go! We hear about it, of course, but we rarely get much exposure to other worlds beyond the people who come from them to visit our little colony. I wonder if I can convince Nathaniel to go on a trip there with me and our daughter."
  4. Player: "Do you enjoy working on the farm?"
Sylvie Munich: "I think it's pretty fun. And, I get to be around my momma and my papa all day, so that's cool. They say we all have to work a little, 'cause it takes all of us to make the community work, just like on Earth a really really really long time ago! Someday I think it'd be cool to see other places and do other things, but this is fine for now."
  5. Player: "I'm here visiting. I'm interested in learning more about the colony."
Maura Munich: "Well, there's lots to learn. You can always feel free to try one of the historical tours, or ask the locals about life here."
  6. Player: "I'm just passing through."
Maura Munich: "Ah, well, don't be afraid to soak in some of the local charm then. We're friendly people, mostly, and we like having visitors."
  7. Player: "I'm thinking about buying a home here."
Maura Munich: "*laughs* Oh, you should probably know then that 'homes' aren't the same as where you're probably from. You'd be lucky to own a private room, let alone a whole hab unit of your own. But don't let that scare you away, it's quite cozy and pleasant here!"
  8. Maura Munich: "I'm fascinated by the other worlds in the Settled Systems. Do you mind if I ask you a question?"
  9. Maura Munich: "Is space travel as exiting as it seems?"
Player: "I'm still amazed by the awe and wonder of it every time I go out there."
Maura Munich: "Well, you've convinced me that I simply must go sometime. Most of us here have never left the surface of New Homestead. It's a point of pride among many people. But, I've always been curious."
  10. Maura Munich: "Is space travel as exiting as it seems?"
Player: "It's nice, but you get used to it after a while."
Maura Munich: "I'd like to think that I wouldn't ever get used to it, that every time would be just as impressive as the first. But, you're not the first person I've spoken to who has said something similar, so I have to believe that I could become just as jaded."
  11. Maura Munich: "Is space travel as exiting as it seems?"
Player: "Honestly, it's a lot of nothing. I can't think of anything more boring than space."
Maura Munich: "Hmm. Well, if you say so. I supposed it stands to reason for a place that is mostly that... nothing."
  12. Maura Munich: "Is the Freestar Collective as lawless as I've heard?"
Player: "The Freestars stand as a monument to freedom. Anyone can live as they please."
Maura Munich: "Really? That sounds nice, but what happens if there's a dispute? Who settles it? Do people really just take the law into their own hands at that point? Can people be trusted to do the right thing? Gosh, I'm sorry, you don't need to answer all of that. I'm just so fascinated by it all."
  13. Maura Munich: "Is the Freestar Collective as lawless as I've heard?"
Player: "It's not as lawless as they lead you to believe. People still believe in rules and justice."
Maura Munich: "I figured the stories weren't all true. How else would you expect people to live together if you can't trust in laws to keep everyone save? Even in a small community like ours, we have to maintain law and order. Though, I understand it gets difficult to always protect that out in the vastness of space. I imagine it's the same in the Freestar Collective."
  14. Maura Munich: "What's New Atlantis like?"
Player: "It's not as impressive as they make it out to be. Too much hustle and bustle."
Maura Munich: "Oh? That's disappointing. It seems so exciting, from all I've heard. It must be a matter of personal taste then. I wonder if I'd like it? Maybe someday I'll get up the nerve to visit myself."
  15. Maura Munich: "Are there really planets full of plants, fresh air, and water?"
Player: "Sure, but they're not all they're cracked up to be. You see one, you've seen them all."
Maura Munich: "Really? I would think anything is better than what we have outside. I'd love to be able to leave without worrying about putting on a suit. I've heard that people can go outside freely on those worlds. But perhaps some of you travelers just get used to it, having been all around the Settled Systems. You should learn not to take it for granted."
  16. Maura Munich: "Is space travel as exiting as it seems?"
Player: "Space is incredible, but it's also extremely dangerous."
Maura Munich: "I've heard stories about pirates, and spaceship malfunctions, and all sorts of terrible things! I've always wanted to try going into space, but I'm also worried about all those dangers. Maybe people here are right. The dangers here are few, and we know how to take care of them. Space is too unknown!"
  17. Maura Munich: "Is the Freestar Collective as lawless as I've heard?"
Player: "It's dangerous. Your only options are to rely on the Rangers, or take the law into your own hands."
Maura Munich: "That does sound dangerous! Even though we're only a small colony, and we're far away from the rest of the UC, they still provide us with plenty of security. And, our local guards are just great. We rarely have trouble, unless it comes from unruly tourists and cargo pilots stopping on their way to Cydonia."
  18. Maura Munich: "What's New Atlantis like?"
Player: "I'm not sure, I've never been there."
Maura Munich: "Oh. Pardon me then, for assuming. I just figured that most people who come here have been just about everywhere. It never really occurred to me any other way."
  19. Maura Munich: "Are there really planets full of plants, fresh air, and water?"
Player: "Maybe, but I've never been to one."
Maura Munich: "A shame, then. You're not too different than I am, I guess. Well, I hope one day both of us will get to experience it for ourselves!"
  20. Maura Munich: "Is the Freestar Collective as lawless as I've heard?"
Player: "I don't know much about them."
Maura Munich: "That's okay. Sometimes I forget that not all the tourists are as well-traveled as I believe they are."
