The Emissary is a very powerful Starborn, who believes that only a chosen few should gain access to the Artifacts and be able to ascend through The Unity. They are one of the primary antagonists of the main quest.

Background[edit]

The Emissary is a result of the Hunter's repeated attacks on Constellation across multiple universes. In almost all universes, the Hunter kills you during his attack on the Eye and the Lodge, and whoever is closest to you takes up leadership of the search for the artifacts, passes through the Unity, and becomes the Emissary, determined to put a stop to the Hunter's rampage and prevent anything like it from happening again. In universes where you complete High Price to Pay, the Emissary is revealed to be an alternate version of whichever companion died during the events of that mission. In universes where you complete Foreknowledge instead, their identity is whoever theoretically would have died on the Eye (the companion with the highest affinity.)

The Emissary pilots a unique white Starborn Guardian, the Helix.

Story[edit]

The Emissary first appears after completing All That Money Can Buy. As you flee Neon, the Helix appears in orbit around Volii Alpha. The Emissary hails you and demands that you turn over your new artifact and cease your search for them. They will refuse to answer any questions about the artifacts or their identity, saying that such knowledge is dangerous. You will either have to surrender the artifact, fight the Helix, or escape via grav jump.

You encounter the Emissary again in In Their Footsteps, where the Hunter invites you to a meeting with the two of them, and they explain their philosophies and positions in detail. At this point, the Emissary gives you the mission Unearthed, hoping that learning the truth behind the fate of Earth will convince you that humanity cannot be trusted with unrestricted access to the artifacts. They appear once again at the end of the mission, where they condemn the actions of Victor Aiza. At this point, you are allowed to either take the Emissary's side, take the Hunter's, or reject both their ideologies.

Dialogue[edit]

A snippet of dialogue among The Hunter, The Emissary and yourself taken during the In Their Footsteps quest. The player's dialogue can be changed based off of prompts during the sequence.

The Emissary: We are not a monolithic people. The Starborn are individuals. Some are united in cause. Others are... in it for themselves.
The Hunter: We're all in it for ourselves. Some of us are just more honest. The Emissary threatened your ship. Demanded you hand over your Artifact. How is that so different from what I did?
The Emissary: We needed to warn you off. Every encounter with one of our kind could spell disaster.
The Hunter: For whom, exactly? I say whoever can collect them should.
You: That doesn't justify murder.
The Hunter: And who gets to say that? You? Me? The Emissary? I have debated morality for near infinity. And all I have found are groups of people enforcing their will on others. Rules and laws spoken as principles but backed by arms and violence.
