Biography[edit]
By the year 2330, Kessic Mohar found himself bereft of his crew, lost to the hands of those who did not believe. He pondered the reasons behind the Great Serpent's allowance of such misfortune and sought forgiveness for his perceived failures. For six weeks, he traversed the stars in a state of penance, contemplating his next steps. Ultimately, he recognized that he could not fulfill his mission to resupply and recruit warriors alone, and despite the pain it caused him, he resolved to return to Va'ruun'kai. He chose to transform his journey into a pilgrimage, retracing the path of Jinan Va'ruun in hopes of reigniting the flame of the Great Serpent that had always burned within him.
After numerous days of grav jumps, Kessic sensed the presence of the Great Serpent as a fleeting sensation, akin to a heavy burden being lifted from his chest. With each jump, he felt increasingly connected to the Great Serpent and closer to home. Overcome with shame regarding his temporary setback, he confessed his yearning to stroll through the streets of Dazra once more, to savor the warmth of Koza, and even to admit his fondness for the foul-smelling beast that made Koza possible. He expressed a deep desire to be among the Promised again, feeling the presence of Jinan beside him, guiding him as the Great Serpent had once guided him to establish his great city. He reflected on the fact that he had not prayed in the Scaled Citadel for 17 years, hoping that his people had cared for it well in his absence.
Kessic eventually arrived at the Volii System, which prompted him to reflect on the past when the stars surrounding him witnessed the revelation of the great the Mourning in accursed space, as Jinan extolled its grandeur. He expressed a longing to have stood alongside the prophet on that momentous day, to observe his strategic brilliance as he deftly balanced diplomacy in one hand while mustering an army with the other, gathering both arms and warriors. He remarked that it would have been a sight of glory to behold the divine fleet of the Promised in all its might. Having heard whispers of other Promised nearby, esteemed warriors of the great crusade and heralds of the shrouding who had served under Jinan.he sought the blessing of the Great Serpent to locate them, to seek their counsel, and to rally them to fight once more in his name.
Following his encounter with the warriors, Kessic felt a profound sense of revulsion towards them, labeling them as liars, fools, blasphemers, and cowards, unworthy of uttering the name of the Great Serpent. He had anticipated discovering heroes of the great crusade, yet instead, he was confronted with frail and broken old men. The most disheartening aspect for him was their disgraceful behavior, which tarnished the purity associated with the Great Serpent's name throughout the settled systems. Since childhood, he had envisioned meeting warriors of their caliber, the purest among the Promised. However, he felt as though he had been driven to madness, with blood and gratitude resting heavily upon him. He expressed his desire to continue the Great Serpent's fight, asserting that his resolve to cleanse the universe of unbelievers had not diminished., only to be dismissed as a zealot. They recounted the horrors of war, confessing to atrocities committed and expressing shame for their actions as heralds of his judgment. This only deepened Kessic's disgust, as he declared that the Great Serpent should not be afraid, for he would not yield to this trial of faith; the fire of the Great Serpent burned brighter within him than ever before.
Fifteen days after departing from the false Promised warriors, Kessic became increasingly fatigued by their frailty, which filled him with disdain. He held Jinan’s son, Jarek, in contempt, referring to him as a “sniveling, gutless worm” for his act of submission to their adversaries following the crusade, immediately after his father left to join the Great Serpents side. Kessic resented Jarek for forsaking Jinan’s vision of conquest and for leaving their people to languish in isolation, where his heretical notions could further corrupt their society. He fervently hoped that his own son, Anasko, would return to the path of the Great Serpent, fearing that otherwise, House Va'ruun would meet its demise. He expressed his concerns about dwindling supplies and his declining health, revealing that he hears disembodied voices in the void, whispering sinful temptations. In desperation, he prayed to the Great Serpent to guide him home
After a period of time, Kessic encountered the "true promised," who welcomed him onto their vessel, provided him with sustenance, and shared news from their home world. There are whispers suggesting that Anasko has embedded himself within the Scaled Citadel, where he is allegedly conducting secretive experiments of a religious nature that harness significant power from the city. Unsure of his true motives and wary of a son of Jarek possessing such technology independently, they resolve to verify these rumors upon their arrival at Va'ruun'kai. Should their suspicions prove accurate, they are prepared to take control by force if necessary. Kessic believed that the Shrouding is imminent and that true believers must assume leadership to pave the way. He expresses hope that the technology, whatever its nature, will lead the Promised back to the illumination of the Great Serpent's teachings and reinvigorate their weapons with formidable intent, aspiring for the galaxy to once again tremble before House Va'ruun.
