Chief Dalitso Pretorius

Chief Dalitso Pretorius is chief of the US Security division in Gagarin Landing. She came to Gagarin Landing about 10 years ago, straight out of training, to assist with security after the mech factories shut down following the events of the Colony War. Following a successful community outreach program that she headed, she was made chief.

She wears a UC Security Uniform. For security purposes, she carries an AA-99 with 11mm Caseless for ammo. She also has an Immobilizer and some Credits.

When first landing at Gagarin Landing, she can be found in front of the local UC Security Office, talking with Bonifác Maksimov and Lawan Ariesen. She can normally be found inside the security office after.

When you speak to her for the first time, she will complain about the corporate control of Gagarin Landing:

"Tell me you're here to just report a good old-fashioned crime. If I have to deal with one more corporate exec begging for special treatment, I'll eat my badge."

You have multiple possible responses:

Not here to report anything. Just getting to know the area.
"Heh. Guess I'm off the hook then.
If you're looking for some new crimes to investigate, I'm happy to oblige.
"Hmm. You know, your stand-up routine leaves something to be desired... Though if you're gunning for a personalized tour of one of Gagarin's holding cells, that can certainly be arranged. Would you, please? Feels like I've been on babysitting duty for months now, the way these new corporates behave sometimes."
Get no argument from me. Corporations are leeches: drain people dry and move on to the next meal.
""Leeches" feels a bit strong. Maybe if they didn't pay their taxes and help repair the catwalks. They're an added annoyance to my day, though, that's for sure."
That seems like a pretty ungrateful response to the folks paying your salary.
"I suppose that's not a completely off-base assessment... ... but I sure wouldn't mind getting back to feeling like a security officer, not a babysitter, sometime soon."
Sorry, what's this about some corporate exec's?
"Oh, you haven't heard? Gagarin's going to be the next New Atlantis. Or so, we've all been told. Centauri Mills, Arc Might, Reliant Medical - they all bought up and renovated derelict buildings here in the city in the past couple years. We needed the jobs, to be sure. Gagarin got hit hard after the mech plants were all shuttered when the Colony War ended. But I'm not sure I've ever met a more entitled group than these executives. Treat the city like an amusement park - and all of us as the amusements. It's kept me and my people plenty busy... just not with actual policing. But, I'm sorry, did you actually need to report something?"

After the initial greeting, you have a few things you can discuss.

How long have you been on the job?
"Well, I came here right out of training, which was... ten years ago now? Gagarin was a lot rougher then. People were still reeling from all the plants getting shut down after the war, so there was a lot of petty theft, break-ins. I was responsible for putting together a pretty busy community outreach program. Worked out well enough that they eventually made me chief."
Is there a lot of crime in Gagarin?
"We've had our issues. Some folks aren't thrilled about the corporations moving in, but the majority don't act on it. Those that do largely keep it civil: protest, throw some paint, occasional crate wanders off. But we've managed to avoid any open conflict so far. It's really not a bad assignment."
Anything I should see while I'm in Gagarin?
"Gagarin's not really that sort of 'burg. Most of the restaurants went belly up when the mech trade shut down. Only one left is Lizzy's, on the other side of town, though it does have a nice view of the square."

The chief has multiple greetings when beginning conversation:

  • "Could use a little chit-chat after the day I've had."
  • "Nice to talk to someone when they're not in trouble..."
  • "... you're not in trouble, right?"
  • "Something you want to report?"

If you stop speaking mid-conversation, she will say:

  • "You can come find me later if you need to."
  • "Uh, should I go find the doctor?"
  • "What's wrong?"

When ending conversations, she will say:

  • "Should get back to it anyway."
  • "Be safe."
  • "Just stay out of trouble."

Conversations[edit]

You will find her conversing with Bonifác Maksimov and Lawan Ariesen

Bonifác Maksimov: "But, Reliant Medical, Arc Might and Centauri Mills are dedicated to Gagarin. We were just hoping Gagarin could show the same dedication in return."
Chief Dalitso Pretorius: "I'm not closing off the city every time you want to run a tour group through here."
Lawan Ariesen: "Our investor visits are the key to making Gagarin a place that works again. A place where people want to live again."
Chief Dalitso Pretorius: "People are living here just fine. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have security work to get back to."
Bonifác Maksimov: "Mech construction is a dead industry, Chief Pretorius. Those jobs aren't coming back."
